"Why I Want to be Principal of PJPII"
The following essays were written by the students who were Principals for one Period during Catholic Schools Week 2007. Please note all essays are shown exactly as written (verbatim) by each student. There is one winner for each day of the school week.
Monday's winner
4th Grade
It would be such a privilege to be the principal of Pope John Paul II Catholic School for a period. Three reasons why I want to be principal for a period are because I want to be just like Mrs. Whitaker, I have a really fun time, and I get to learn about Mrs. Whitakers job. If I were principal for a period I would as pleased as punch.
My first reason why I want to principal is because I want to be myself, but be like Dr. Whitaker. Mrs. Whitaker is so smart and full of brains. She is also incredibly nice. Whenever she walks by a PJPII student, she smiles. The most important thing that Mrs. Whitaker does of being principal is caring for our school. That's what she does best. If there is a problem with our school, or if something is going wrong, my principal does the best to fix it and make it so much better.
Being principal for a period would be so much fun! The feeling of sitting in her comfy, cozy office chair is the most wonderful feeling. I almost feel like the Queen of England. Also, being principal for a period, I can do all different kinds of fun office work. I never get tired of Queen Whitakers office. It is full of cheerful Disney decorations from the roof to the floor! Her little bowl of candy welcomes you right into her office.
If I'm principal, I can learn all about what Dr. Whitaker does during the day. I'll be able to understand what she does and why she does it. Mrs. Whitaker is so busy every day. I want to see things from her point of veiw (sic) , which would be awsome(sic)! Just maybe, someday, I might be the real principal of Pope John Paul II Catholic School.
Being principal of Pope John Paul II School for a period would be superb. Three reasons why I want to be principal are because I want to be like Mrs. Whitaker, I have a fun time, and I get to learn about Dr. Whitakers job. Being principal for a period would be something for me to remember a lifetime.

Wednesday's Winner
2nd grade
I would like to be principal of PJPII because I will help kids.
A principal is a good role model who spreads the good word about the school.
Mrs. Whitaker cares about the future of the school and their students.
My principal is very special because she cares about her students outside of school. Mrs. Whitaker came to my soccer game one weekend to show her support.
I believe if I am chosen for principal for a day I will follow in Mrs. Whitaker's footsteps whis is caring for all the students and the school.
Thursday's Winner
4th grade
I would love to principal for a period! The three reasons I would like to be principal for a period are: getting to have my own office, getting to walk around the school, and getting to use the intercom.
To begin with, the first reason I would like to be principal is so I can have my own office. In my office I could answer E-mails and letters. Plus, I have my own space and have peace. I also can read books in my office. It would be so cool. Teachers could come in my office, too.
Another reason I would like to be principal is so I can walk around the school campus. I can get to see what the older kids learn. I could go anywhere I wanted except the janitors (sic) closet because I would not want to go there. Besides, I like walking on the cement walkway with sunshine shining in the court yard. I would get to go to my favorite place, which is the library. I can almost imagine it!
The final reason I would like to be Principal for a period is because I would get to use the intercom. I could call up a teacher or student. Also, I could ask a teacher to do something for me. I could make an announcement to the whole school. Part of it is so I could push the buttons. I have not done it before.

2nd grade
I would like to be principal of PJPII because I want to help the teachers in giving good discipline to all students. I want to make sure that the students will have more fun in learning and I will have a math and spelling contest every week for each grade and also give the students rewards if they get good grades. I will give free snacks to all students every Friday. If we never had a principal this whole school would fall.
The Earth's Ozone Layer
Fourth-grade students learned about the Earth's Ozone Layer in science class. Here is a sampling of how and why we need to save the ozone layer.
"Why do we have to save the ozone layer?"
We have to save the ozone layer because Earth’s ozone layer is like sunscreen. If the ozone layer gets thinner, the sun’s rays would beat down on us. I the sun’s rays beat on us then we would be prunes.
One way to save the ozone layer is if we stop people from using aerosol cans. Also, if we get rid of old refrigerators, the chemicals won’t destroy the ozone layer. We have to save it because if we don’t, we will have sunburns all over. Also we could get blind and the plants would get dried out. But don’t fret, scientists are stopping it but we can still help.
It will disappear from aerosol cans and refrigerators. If the ozone layer disappears, we will have sunburns all over.
The ozone layer is so important because it acts as a sunscreen to Earth. Ozone protects us from the Sun’s harmful rays. Higher in the atmosphere, ozone protects our health.
To try to keep the ozone layer from disappearing, I will make sure the aerosol spray cans my family and people I know will not use CFC gases in any way. CFC gases can destroy the ozone layer. We have to save the ozone layer because these CFC gases will thin out the ozone layer which makes everything warmer. It is also causing part of global warming. So save our ozone layer and save yourself from the heat.
One way I can save the ozone layer is by making sure old refrigerators have no Freon in them. If we don’t save the ozone layer we would all be sunburned. The ozone layer is like sunscreen to protect us.
One thing I can do to save the ozone layer is not to use aerosol cans. They have harmful chemicals called CFCs which can destroy the ozone layer. Our environment would be destroyed. We have to save the ozone layer because the ozone layer protects us from the sun. The ozone is a type of oxygen. It protects our health. It’s like sunscreen to Earth. Without it everything would dry up.
We have to save the ozone layer because if we don’t have the ozone layer, it could cause a risk to human health and the health of crops. It could also change the climate in ways no one can predict.
The ozone layer protects us from the sun. It protects everything from drying out. It is a sunscreen to Earth. We can protect the ozone layer by not using old aerosol cans. I can also tell people, air conditioners have CFCs in them.
I can help save the ozone layer by getting rid of CFCs. If we don’t get rid of them the ozone layer will be destroyed. If CFCs keep developing, everything will dry up. Everyone needs to help scientists save the ozone layer.
